Cybil’s Moonlighting

Oh, give us a break! Has “Slick Willie” Clinton lowered the bar this far?

OK, we thought, so Warren Beatty is thinking about running for president of the United States. We’ll cross that know-your-limitations bridge when we come to it. But now, we see Cybill Shepherd is “seriously considering” taking a shot at the Oval Office. The actress is thinking about running on a main platform of ensuring abortion access.

What next? Jerry Lewis for the Supreme Court? Madonna for Foreign Affairs? Jack “You can’t handle the truth” Nicholson for CIA Director? Cher for … oh, forget it. No offence, people, but you’re actors. Not rocket scientists. Not lawyers (although goodness knows we don’t need more of them in elected office). Not business leaders.

You know how to emote. How to memorize lines and pretend to be someone you’re not. Yeah, yeah. We know about Ronnie Reagan and Sonny Bono and whatsizname who played Gopher on The Love Boat. But at least they had the decency to start a little lower on the political ladder than President, Commander-in-Chief and Defender of the American Way.  (Hamilton Spectator Editorial, D14, 9/11/1999)

Please note…

This website contains satirical commentaries of current events going back several decades. Some readers may not share this sense of humour nor the opinions expressed by the artist. To understand editorial cartoons it is important to understand their effectiveness as a counterweight to power. It is presumed readers approach satire with a broad minded foundation and healthy knowledge of objective facts of the subjects depicted.
