Patrick Corrigan

June 26, 2007

June 26, 2007 by Graeme MacKay

More than 200 people attended the event on Saturday June 23rd to honour the life of Shiragha Rahimi, celebrate his cartoons, and raise funds for the post-secondary education of the seven children he left behind when he was killed in a car accident in January. Early estimates suggest the event raised over $10,000.

Several Canadian Editorial Cartoonists presented their work to the crowds, several others attended just to show their support.

Clockwise from the top left, 2 photos of Brian Gable of the Globe & Mail; 3 of Terry (aka Aislin) Mosher of the Montreal Gazette (the centre photo with Hamide Rahimi, Shiragha’s daughter); Iranian cartoonist Nik Kowsar – also the great photographer who took these pictures; Roy Carless, dean of Canadian Editorial Cartooning; Patrick Corrigan from the Toronto Star; a beaming me, Graeme MacKay; and Sue Dewar from the Ottawa Sun.

Here’s me doing my slideshow presentation, a selection of cartoons where I complain about things and complain about other people who are complaining. They say television adds 50lbs to you. In this widescreen version the size of me is pretty accurate. Here’s a Hamilton Spectator video of the Rahimi Event

Donations are welcome at any TD Canada Trust, and listed for Branch 346, Account 6312464.

FEEDBACK

I’m very glad CRN Canada was able to help the children. My thanks and sympathy go out to his widow and children and thanks as well to Nik Kowsar and Mike de Adder, and also to Guy Badeaux, who has always beena great supporter of compassionate help for cartoonists.

Please note…

This website contains satirical commentaries of current events going back several decades. Some readers may not share this sense of humour nor the opinions expressed by the artist. To understand editorial cartoons it is important to understand their effectiveness as a counterweight to power. It is presumed readers approach satire with a broad minded foundation and healthy knowledge of objective facts of the subjects depicted.
