October 11, 2007 – Ontario Election Review

October 11, 2007 by Graeme MacKay

And now a little cartoon round-up of the 2007 Provincial election. My apologies if you can’t stand reading around hypertext.

I think McGuinty had this election in bag even before the campaign started. In my books the Green Party dropped several notches back into wingnut territory when their own holiday pledge… but anyway…

The people of Ontario have decided (by hypnosis?), or at least half of the province’s eligible voters did, and it’ll be 4 more years of Liberal government, with Dalton McGuinty at the helm.

Voters also decided to nix the electoral reform referendum question Mixed Member Proportional either out of ignorance, or confusion, or just because it plain wasn’t palatable.

I can’t say that I’m happy or sad over the reality… perhaps blas is the best word to describe how I feel over the election results. In terms of cartooning, the next four years of Dalton McGuinty should be as bountiful as the last four. In my mind the vote was not an endorsement of the McGuinty Liberals but a rejection of John Tory’s lame brain idea to introduce public funding for religious schools when there was no popular demand for such a thing in the first place. It only hijacked the campaign and overshadowed many more issues that deserved better discussion. Much damage could have been inflicted on the McGuinty Liberals by the PC’s by reminding voters of all the broken promises and dubious issuing of government grants from a secret slush fund. Hardly anything was brought up during the campaign regarding the ongoing mess between the Province and natives over the standoff at Caledonia. Even Howie Hampton’s attempt to remind voters of the $22,000 payraise didn’t stick to the Liberals.

Despite trying to appeal to voters as a renewed moderate party faith based funding of schools did the PC’s in. John Tory’s back tracking on the issue a week ago only made a mockery of the PC’s official election slogan for the campaign, “Leadership Matters“. By this past Thankgiving weekend, it was pretty clear that John Tory had become the turkey about to be carved. I think John Tory is a very smart man. He is a man of a lot of political backroom experience having served as a mandarin for Bill Davis and Brian Mulroney. He’s got great crudentials in law, business, and charitable organizations. On one hand he has what it takes to be a great premier, on the other he has a disasterous track record of defeat, such as losing this election, losing the Toronto Mayoral election against David Miller, and heading the horrible campaign of the federal PC’s in 1993 which resulted in a near wipe out of seats in the House of Commons. You’d think he’d learn by now but even in defeat the guy just doesn’t know when to quit:

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these cartoon process thingys. This one was inspired by the work of the great James Gillray. I created one similar to the 18th century style when I drew on the ongoing negotiations over the Caledonia standoff.

Visitors to my site will note my cartoons on international affairs are few and far between. My cartoons on the federal, local issues are far more abundant in numbers. Occasionally non domestic cartoons will creep in when domestic issues have become dull or just plain tired. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to declare that most people are fatigued with anything having to do with Quebec’s election 5 days ago. The latest big national story is the RCMP coverup, which already has my eyes glazing over and having me think, well haven’t we been down this road before? R.C.M.P. = Y.A.W.N. – nobody around here is talking about it.

So my mind was set on the recent debacle between Britain and Iran which is like a good old fashioned cold war like escalation of good against evil. I have a feeling the Iran thing will be hanging around as long as the RCMP thing — months.

Speaking of international cartoons two of my old galleries have just been updated. The old September 11 gallery has now been amalgamated and showcases stuff drawn related to the War on Terror. The Iraq Gallery has also been updated.

Today’s cartoon is the result of two tantalizing stories in yesterday’s Hamilton Spectator. One involving a theatrical debate between two city councillors over a transit fare increase, and another regarding the low ticket sales for an upcoming local event featuring former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Here are the actual newspaper clippings along with the resultant thoughts (boxing posters) and sketches:

I boil the concept down to a face to face boxing advert that allows me to sketch in the featured speakers at the original Copps Coliseum event, Bob Rae, and Bill Clinton:

Time to go over the pencil lines with India Ink:

Inked line drawing gets scanned into my computer:

Drawing needs a background. Let’s go with a archived screen shot that sorta resembles a crowd:

The white background is isolated and deleted letting the crowd scene show:

Clip off the outside stuff and add shadows, some constrast, and voila…it’s done.

FEEDBACK

Enjoyed your Merulla vs… one. Another way to stay at Copps might have been to get Bill C. to waive his 6 figure fee(likely impossible) or someone else, say Stephen Lewis to come for a mere 5 figure donation. Who knows!! Turning the page I cannot help but think that the photo of the embarrassed Queen, hiding her face might make for a good cartoon. Caption possibility”Not in the program, Phil(ip). WE are not amused”Suspect that photo is/was front page all over the world.
Keep your creations coming,please!

Here’s another focus on the process of drawing a cartoon, from newspaper clipping of an article to a clipping of the editorial cartoon:

Here’s a nice link to a political blog related to David Suzuki and his cross Canada crusade.
