Pierre Poilievre’s inflation disinformation

April 26, 2022

For every serious, stubborn and complicated problem, there’s an ambitious politician peddling a bogus plan to fix it. And if you need any proof, just listen to Pierre Poilievre’s simplistic explanation for runaway inflation, and then his troubling proposal for saving the economy. The narrative being spun by this federal Conservative leadership hopeful is that the Bank of Canada’s leadership is “financially illiterate” and its incompetence punished the country with the worst inflation in three decades. As prime minister, he would sort the bank out, pronto. And to make sure that happens, he announced at a leadership debate Wednesday that if he forms the government, he would fire Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem.

Doug Ford vows to fire CEO and board of Hydro One if elected premier

January 15, 2016

Doug Ford says that if he is elected premier this spring, he will fire the CEO of Hydro One and the company’s board of directors.

The Progressive Conservative leader says he would dump CEO Mayo Schmidt because the head of the partially privatized utility presided over a dramatic increase in rates and earned a $6.2 million salary last year.

Tory energy critic Todd Smith says in order to fire Schmidt the government would have to first fire and replace the Hydro One board, which would then have to fire the CEO.

Smith says it’s also not clear how much it would cost to fire the CEO since his contract is not public.

Smith says the party will have further details on how it plans to address hydro costs at a later date. (Source: Hamilton Spectator)

Firing Comey won’t save Trump from the flames of the Russia scandal

“This is Nixonian” was the reaction of Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, to the news that President Trump had fired FBI director James Comey.

Casey, echoed by fellow Democrats, was referring to the infamous Saturday Night Massacre, when President Richard Nixon fired the special prosecutor and attorney general who were leading the Watergate investigation. The massacre did not derail the probe. It only fueled calls for Nixon’s impeachment.

We know that President Trump has a stunning ignorance of history. He recently flubbed the basics of the causes of the civil war and seemed to think the famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass was still alive and had “done an amazing job”. It’s certainly possible that President Trump doesn’t know the lessons of Watergate.

The most famous lesson is that the cover-up is always worse than the crime.

We don’t yet know the full story of Russia’s meddling in the election, but the abrupt firing of the FBI director, who was leading an investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, certainly reeks of a cover-up.

The firings did not save Richard Nixon from impeachment in the Watergate scandal and getting rid of Comey won’t save Donald Trump from the flames of the Russia scandal.

Comey’s abrupt removal as FBI director only brought calls for an independent prosecutor to a fever pitch. Senate minority leader Charles Schumer said unless such a prosecutor is appointed, “everyone will suspect cover-up.” (Continued: The Guardian)
