Bratina axes new year shindig

Mayor Bob Bratina has cancelled his New Year’s Day levee.

The mayor, who held the traditional reception at the start of 2011, won’t be holding such a meet-and-greet for 2012.

“There will not be a levee this year as it is the first chance Mayor Bratina could take a vacation with his family in two years,” Peggy Chapman, Bratina’s chief of staff, said in an email.

“When he returns, we are right back into the budget (process).”

This year, Bratina hosted a levee on New Year’s Day and invited the public to view his private offices. He also played the saxophone in the City Hall lobby outside his office.

Over the past month, Bratina’s office has been plagued by a gaffe involving a $30,000 raise Chapman will receive in 2012. Bratina was harshly criticized for blaming the raise on the human resources staff, even though he was the one who instigated it.

Bratina is currently the subject of an integrity investigation for his conduct in the so-called “Peggygate” scandal. (Source: Hamilton Spectator)
