As Canadians shelter indoors to escape the relentless wildfire smoke, it’s clear: climate change is no longer a distant threat; it’s here, now, impacting our daily lives. The increasing frequency and severity of smoke alerts are not random acts of nature. They are the direct result of a warming planet.
Recent reports highlight how climate change is extending wildfire seasons and intensifying their severity. Warmer temperatures and prolonged drought conditions create perfect conditions for massive fires. As noted in the New York Times article, it’s not just an Ontario issue; smoke knows no borders, affecting air quality as far as New York City.

The Toronto Star points out that even indoors, we’re not safe from the dangers of smoke. Our buildings, not designed to block these pollutants, allow smoke to infiltrate, affecting our health. Respiratory issues, throat irritation, and more severe health risks are becoming part of our new normal.
Despite these clear indicators, skepticism and denialism persist, particularly in influential circles. The current U.S. administration, echoing past Republican regimes, prioritizes fossil fuels over green energy. This approach ignores the pressing need for sustainable solutions, further entrenching the “drill, baby, drill” mentality.
