Doug Ford has once again hit the pause button on Ontario’s democracy, closing the legislature until nearly Halloween. This extended break seems more like a strategy to dodge accountability than a justified recess. With only 30 sitting days in 2026 and a total of 80 since the last election in 2025, the numbers speak for themselves. Ford appears to prefer avoiding uncomfortable questions rather than facing them head-on.

The decision to hibernate the legislature is a clear attempt to sidestep the probing inquiries that come with parliamentary scrutiny. By avoiding Question Period, Ford conveniently escapes the spotlight that holds leaders accountable. His rationale for the recess, citing municipal elections, rings hollow, especially given his history of interfering in municipal matters.

Opinion: Doug Ford has made MPPs into seasonal workers, and we all suffer. 

Ontarians deserve a government that’s present and accountable, not one that retreats at the first sign of controversy. It’s time for Ford to come out of hiding and engage with the pressing issues facing the province. If not, the public may soon decide they need leadership that doesn’t disappear when the going gets tough.
