Despite the proven success of mRNA technology in combating COVID-19 and its potential for addressing numerous other diseases, Kennedy dismisses it based on unfounded claims. With attractions like Disney World drawing global visitors, the potential for outbreaks is heightened—a concern echoed by health experts on both sides of the border.

Internationally, the situation is equally alarming. Countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia have updated their travel advisories, cautioning citizens about visiting the U.S. The reasons range from immigration policies to public health concerns, with the latter significantly influenced by the current administration’s disregard for scientific evidence. As misinformation gains traction, fuelled by officials like Kennedy, the U.S.’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination is eroding.

The economic impact is tangible. A projected $12.5 billion loss in international traveler spending this year reflects not a lack of interest in visiting the U.S., but a hesitancy driven by policy decisions that prioritize ideology over science. For American citizens, the stakes are equally high. By promoting skepticism and misinformation, policies like Kennedy’s threaten to reverse decades of medical progress. The potential resurgence of diseases long kept at bay by vaccines could lead to preventable suffering and death—a tragic outcome in a country that once led the world in public health advancements.

In a time when global cooperation and trust in science are more crucial than ever, the U.S.’s current trajectory is both baffling and dangerous. It is imperative that policymakers, health professionals, and citizens alike advocate for a return to evidence-based practices. The health and safety of millions depend on it, and the world is watching.

Strength in an Unqualified Cabinet

Putting Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in charge of the Health Department is like making a cat guard the fishbowl. He’s got zero qualifications for the job, and his anti-vaccine stance is downright reckless. Trump’s decision to appoint him is a clear example of picking loyalty over expertise, surrounding himself with a crew that makes him look like the sensible one.

The Republicans could have stopped this during the Congressional screening, just like they did with Matt Gaetz for Attorney General. But they caved to Trump’s pressure, choosing to follow along rather than stand up for accountability. It’s frustrating to see how conspiracy theories and unfounded beliefs overshadow scientific facts, creating a real danger for public health.

This isn’t just about RFK Jr.; it’s about the whole approach of putting unqualified people in key positions. It makes a mockery of the system and puts lives at risk. How many more Americans need to be affected before we start demanding leaders who actually know what they’re doing and prioritize facts over fiction?

While everyone is suffering daily whiplash from the unpredictable actions of the attention-seeking U.S. President, who dictates what we should focus on, I chose this week to shine a light on his abysmal environmental record. Each day, I posted a past editorial cartoon featuring Donald Trump, highlighting his horrific efforts to turn back the clock on progress toward a better planet for future generations.

Throughout his first term, Donald Trump’s actions and policies consistently undermined efforts to protect the environment, setting a dangerous precedent for his potential return to the presidency. This week, we explored his abysmal record through a series of editorial cartoons from that period, illustrating his disregard for ecological integrity. The horrors unleashed during his first term foreshadow an even more troubling future, as there is no indication that his stewardship of the planet will improve.

Sunday: The Legacy of Plastic Pollution

“This is Your Life in Single Use Plastics” (April 24, 2018)

This cartoon highlights the long-lasting impact of plastic waste, showcasing how every piece of disposable plastic carries a story tied to human experiences. During his first term, Trump’s push to roll back environmental protections, including regulations on single-use plastics, exemplifies a neglect of sustainable practices. In one of his early executive orders of his second Presidency he triumphantly put to end perhaps the greatest among the most ridiculous first world problems: paper straws. It was met with roaring cheers within the planet’s greatest throw-away society. His prioritization of short-term political gains over environmental responsibility signals a troubling trend that jeopardizes future generations.

Monday: Make Coal Great Again

In this cartoon, Trump is depicted as a giant figure overshadowing a polluted landscape, emphasizing his commitment to reviving the declining coal industry while Canada advanced in reducing carbon emissions. Throughout his first term, Trump rolled back critical environmental regulations to support fossil fuels. This focus on short-term economic interests, at the expense of climate change and public health, raises serious concerns about what awaits in his upcoming term.

Tuesday: Attacking the Great Lakes

Wednesday: Withdrawing from Global Climate Agreements

This imagery illustrates Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, depicting him as a direct threat to global climate efforts. His exit during his first term positioned the U.S. as an outlier, undermining international cooperation essential for combating climate change. The ramifications of this withdrawal continue to echo, and with Trump’s return to office, American multilateralism isn’t in the backseat as it was in Trump’s first term, it’s tied up and muzzled in the trunk. There is zero reason to believe he will prioritize global climate responsibility.

Thursday: Flaming Misinformation

In the midst of devastating wildfires during his first term, Trump dismissed climate change as a factor, attributing the crisis solely to mismanagement. This cartoon captures the chaos and denial surrounding his administration’s approach to environmental issues. By downplaying the role of climate change, Trump perpetuates misinformation that obstructs meaningful dialogue and action on pressing ecological challenges—a trend that’s already been on repeat in 2025 with the devastating fires in southern California and around Los Angeles.

Friday: America’s Conspiracy Theory President

Politicizing Natural Disasters (October 9, 2024)

This cartoon illustrates the absurdity of politicizing natural disasters, highlighting the dangerous rhetoric employed by Trump and others. As Hurricanes tore through Florida and into North Carolina in October 2024, the sight of politicians leveraging human suffering for their gain was a stark reminder of how far we have strayed from the ideals of public service. The portrayal suggests that as disasters arise, Trump may exploit them for political gain, rather than addressing the underlying environmental issues exacerbated by his policies. His actions to advance conspiracy theories reflect a broader pattern of misinformation and of neglect that not only impacts public trust in essential services but also threatens the planet’s future.

An unveiling… Drum Roll Please…

My hope is the editorial cartoons from this week highlight the environmental issues worsened by Donald Trump’s presidency. His focus on short-term economic gains continues to harm efforts to protect our planet. This has fuelled climate change skepticism, especially with support from figures like Canada’s Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, creating challenges for initiatives like the Liberal carbon pricing scheme. Although this scheme was designed to reduce emissions, it has faced pushback due to poor communication and relentless and simplistic political rhetoric.

Last year, to celebrate the 4th anniversary of my viral “waves” cartoon, I came up with two new wave concepts to follow the biodiversity collapse wave: a Zombie Apocalypse and an Alien Invasion. But then, along came Michael Solomon, director of London based Profit Through Ethics Ltd., who proposed a new idea for the fifth wave. With excitement, we unveil a new fifth wave for the fifth anniversary of the illustration.

Drumroll, please …Trump! A fitting representation of the political upheaval that threatens not just environmental protection but the planet in general. To the many skeptics out there, keep washing your hands, and all will be well….

By now, the recent revelations about Canadian far-right influencers embedded in an alleged Russian propaganda scheme should be a wake-up call to anyone who values Canadian democracy. The U.S. Department of Justice’s indictment against two Russian nationals, accusing them of covertly funding Tenet Media—a media outlet tied to Canadian influencers Lauren Chen and Lauren Southern—has brought an insidious problem to light. Yet this scandal may be only the tip of the iceberg, highlighting a growing threat to our country: foreign-funded disinformation campaigns aimed at radicalizing Canadians, creating chaos, and undermining Western institutions.

We often think of foreign interference in abstract terms, assuming it’s something that happens “elsewhere”—in the U.S. or Europe. But this activity is unfolding in our own backyard. Canadian far-right influencers have become willing collaborators in these schemes, taking advantage of our digital platforms to broadcast propaganda, peddle disinformation, and inflame societal tensions. What’s more, this foreign-backed radicalization effort mirrors the traits of homegrown terrorism, aiming to weaken the state from within by fostering hate, fear, and division.

Take Lauren Chen and Lauren Southern, two figures central to Tenet Media’s pro-Russian propaganda efforts. These influencers have become part of a dangerous transnational network that seeks to destabilize not only the U.S., but also Canada. Southern, a vocal supporter of the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory, has collaborated with figures like Aleksandr Dugin, a known ally of Vladimir Putin. Chen, meanwhile, built a following with her anti-immigration, anti-LGBTQ views, creating content that mirrored the Kremlin’s talking points. Both individuals are deeply intertwined in the international far-right media ecosystem, and both contributed content designed to stoke outrage over issues like immigration and cultural identity.

This goes beyond mere opinion-shaping. When foreign actors like Russia fund and direct the narrative of far-right media outlets, the consequences are dire. They manipulate real grievances—about housing affordability, inflation, and the erosion of trust in government institutions—to serve their strategic interests. The allegations against Tenet Media and its Canadian founders demonstrate how vulnerable we are to outside influence when our own influencers are willing to sell out our democracy.

Russia’s goal, as former CSIS director Richard Fadden warns, is not just to influence the U.S. presidential election but to erode trust in institutions across the West, including Canada. This is not just about disinformation; it’s about creating a psychological state of disillusionment and division. It’s about weakening the social fabric by promoting cultural warfare, distrust, and polarization. The strategy is simple but effective: amplify fringe voices, divide communities, and let chaos unfold from within.

This tactic should be considered akin to a new form of homegrown terrorism. While it may not involve guns or bombs, it involves something far more dangerous: the poisoning of minds. When we see online comment sections flooded with pro-Russian talking points or blatant Kremlin propaganda, it’s not hard to recognize the pattern. Influencers like Lauren Southern and Lauren Chen may not have planted physical explosives, but they have helped detonate ideological bombs that fragment our society.

The recent revelation that $10 million in Russian money was funnelled to Tenet Media and its Canadian collaborators underlines the scale of this disinformation campaign. Far from being passive bystanders, these individuals were active participants in shaping narratives that played directly into Russian hands.

What’s more concerning is that Tenet Media and its Canadian influencers are just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Many far-right media personalities, both in Canada and the U.S., have been parroting Kremlin talking points for years. These talking points, whether about Ukraine, immigration, or Western values, have seeped into the broader conservative ecosystem, influencing not just media but politics. Prominent figures, such as Tucker Carlson in the U.S., have shown remarkable alignment with Russian narratives on issues like Ukraine, further complicating the fight against disinformation.

As one concerned reader commented, “The calls are coming from inside the house.” And they’re right. The influence of foreign disinformation campaigns is not just an external threat; it’s been internalized by many of our own citizens who now openly question the legitimacy of our institutions and media.

How did we become so polarized in such a short time? It’s no coincidence that nations like Russia, China, and Iran are using sophisticated disinformation tactics to turn citizens against one another. Russia, in particular, excels at exploiting societal fault lines to sow discord. Whether it’s inflaming outrage over gender issues or immigration, or pushing narratives that undermine public trust in health measures, the goal is always the same: division. And the Ottawa occupation and Coutts blockade are prime examples of how these foreign-backed movements have amplified domestic unrest.

The protests and occupations we’ve seen in recent years are more reactions to propaganda than to any genuine grassroots discontent. They’re reactions stoked by agitators who profit from division, just as Russia profits from a weakened and polarized Canada.

So, what can we do? As another reader insightfully pointed out, “The best offence is one where the enemy doesn’t even realize they’re being attacked.” This is exactly what’s happening in Canada today. The Russian state and its allies have perfected the art of ideological subversion, making it hard to even recognize that we’re under attack.

We need to call this out for what it is: a coordinated attack on our democracy. Canada cannot afford to become a safe haven for far-right influencers acting as foreign agents. It is crucial that policymakers take stronger steps to regulate social media platforms and introduce foreign agent registries. We must also foster public awareness about how disinformation works and how to identify it.

Finally, as individuals, we need to talk to our friends, family, and colleagues. Explain what’s happening. Expose the insidious nature of these disinformation campaigns, and make sure we are getting our news from credible, trusted sources. By doing so, we can help stop this growing form of ideological terrorism from further taking root in Canada.

As automakers like Ford, BMW, Volkswagen, and Tesla phase out AM radios from their new vehicles, a cornerstone of American life teeters on the brink of obsolescence. The removal of AM radio from cars signifies more than just a shift in technology; it marks the erosion of a key medium that has been the voice of local communities for nearly a century. This change is part of a broader trend that is seeing traditional centralized sources of information—radio, television, and daily newspapers—being eclipsed by the vast, decentralized world of the internet. While this transition is exciting in its promise of innovation, it leaves us to grapple with the profound implications of losing a vital source of local information.

The recent closure of WCBS Newsradio 880 is a stark illustration of this trend. For nearly 60 years, WCBS was a bastion of all-news radio, providing reliable updates and in-depth coverage of local and national events. Its impending shutdown, as Audacy shifts its focus to sports programming, highlights the financial and operational challenges facing traditional news formats. Despite being a top-billing station, WCBS’s inability to survive in the current media climate underscores the fragility of established media outlets in the face of evolving consumer preferences and technological changes.

Similarly, the shuttering of CHML in Hamilton, Ontario, this week, further exemplifies this shift. CHML’s departure from the airwaves represented the loss of a local institution that had served the community for decades. This move not only deprived listeners of a trusted source of local news but also contributed to the growing phenomenon of news deserts, where local information becomes scarce and harder to access.

The loss of local radio is emblematic of a broader issue: the decline of traditional media outlets that have long served as the backbone of local news. This shift has significant consequences for public accountability, as fewer local journalists are available to cover city council meetings, school board decisions, and other vital civic matters.

As we navigate these uncharted waters, society appears to be adrift, struggling to find its bearings in a rapidly changing media landscape. The evolution from centralized traditional media to a decentralized digital world is fraught with challenges. Job losses in journalism and broadcasting have been significant, leading to uncertainty about the future of local information. In the absence of robust local media, rumours, confusion, and misinformation can spread unchecked, undermining the very fabric of our communities.

As a result, we find ourselves in a precarious position where the loss of local radio and other traditional media forms threatens the cohesion and informed nature of our society.

In this moment of transition, it is crucial to reflect on what we stand to lose and what we must do to preserve the integrity of local information. Efforts to save local radio are not just about preserving a nostalgic past but about ensuring that our communities remain informed, engaged, and connected. We must seek ways to adapt traditional media’s strengths to the digital age, finding new models that blend the best of both worlds. Only then can we hope to navigate these uncharted seas without losing our way. (AI)

Way back in September 1995, before I became the Spec’s editorial cartoonist, I drew for the Brabant chain of newspapers serving the communities of Hamilton, Dundas, Ancaster, Flamborough, Stoney Creek and Hamilton Mountain. I was given a nice gig at the time illustrating local personalities (John Fortino, Max Mintz, Sheila Copps, George Love and Jimmy Lomax) written up by longtime CHML radio presenter, John Hardy. He was axed from his job in local radio the same year, 1997, when I was hired at the Hamilton Spectator. In the Saturday August 17 edition in the Spec, Hardy reflects on the loss of am900 CHML, and what it means for the city of Hamilton.

The COVID-19 pandemic taught us many painful but invaluable lessons. One of the most significant is the paramount importance of trusting in science and heeding the advice of health experts. As we face the potential threat of the H5N1 avian influenza, it is crucial to remember these lessons and ensure that we prevent and mitigate such dangerous viral outbreaks through informed, science-based actions.

Science is our most powerful tool in understanding and combating infectious diseases. The rapid development and deployment of COVID-19 vaccines were nothing short of miraculous, showcasing the incredible capabilities of modern scientific research. These vaccines saved countless lives and provided a pathway out of the pandemic. Similarly, ongoing research into H5N1 and other viruses holds the promise of new vaccines, treatments, and preventive measures that could protect millions.

Listening to their advice on mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination was key to reducing transmission and saving lives.

As we confront the threat of H5N1, it is vital to continue valuing and following the advice of health experts. The virus’s high fatality rate and recent spread to new animal hosts, including dairy cattle, highlight the urgency of taking proactive measures. Ignoring expert advice could lead to a preventable disaster.
